Who is Dr. Engel?
Born and raised in Texas, brought to Virginia by the grace of God.
Dr. William Travis Engel is a dedicated public servant, physician, and proud Bedford County parent running for the School Board to strengthen our schools and advocate for every child’s success.
Born and raised in Texas, Dr. Engel began his career in public service as a firefighter and paramedic. It was during this time that he met his wife, who was working as a school nurse — a shared commitment to helping others that laid the foundation for their future together.
Driven by a desire to expand his ability to care for children and families, Dr. Engel made the decision to pursue medical school. He was accepted to Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine, prompting a move to Bedford County, where he and his family have since planted deep roots.
Following his medical education, Dr. Engel completed a residency in pediatric medicine along with advanced training in pediatric critical care. He currently serves as Chair of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine for a major health system in Central Virginia, where he leads efforts to improve care for children across the region.
In addition to his professional work, Dr. Engel is a hands-on public school parent and an active youth sports coach — volunteering with his son's wrestling team and his daughter’s lacrosse team. He also serves in leadership roles on several local, state, and national boards and organizations, reflecting a broad commitment to service and collaboration.
Dr. Engel’s education includes the following:
Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington
Master of Biomedical Science from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth
Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Liberty University
Dr. Engel and his family attend Crosspoint Church in Lynchburg, Virginia where they actively serve in multiple ministries.
When he’s not at work you can find Dr. Engel riding his bicycle around town or running along the Blackwater Creek Trail, training for his next triathlon. He enjoys the natural beauty and splendor the area provides and values time outdoors with his family.
Whether serving as a firefighter, paramedic, physician, or community leader, Dr. Engel has always stepped up to meet the needs of others. Now, he’s ready to bring that same dedication and leadership to the Bedford County School Board — working every day to ensure our schools are safe, strong, and focused on helping every student reach their full potential.
